Your Bass Notes

In this poem about my first love I draw on my love of nature, comparing his deep voice to the crow’s caw and the Earth’s rumble, to portray the spellbinding effect he had on me.

Your Bass Notes

Like the crow,
It's cawing forever apart and aloud,
Yet the most beloved of all my myriad feathered friends;
The majestic birds of prey;
The songbirds and the table-birds;
And all the coloured dainty things,
That take flight on pretty wings.

Your low bass notes complete my harmony,
The piece that I write,
The one for my life.
Oh why do I need this sound so?
Well imagine a world without a crow.

Your rumble deep
Vibrates my strings.
Plays a sound sweet
As the music of the Earth
Giving birth to Creation
Deep within her core.
You only have to put your ear to the floor!
To a sea-shell;
Or just close your eyes and withdraw.

When you lay beside me
And speak softly,
It's not just the gurgling of the brook to my ear.
Your voice reverberates
Through my very whole being,
And plays a dark melody
Which carries us to the sacred river.

And as we lie on her banks,
Wildly she roars,
Until we find bliss and Union,
In her deep waters.
